The Scout Guide Presents…Brian Hazen

The Scout Guide Aspen released its third edition this summer and I am pleased to be a part of it! Working with Brooke Casillas, editor, photographer, and business woman, was a great treat. It is especially gratifying to be able to spotlight some of the unique and important Aspen philanthropic events of the year. So while my choices for the Scout Guide feature was painfully culled, I hope to give space here to many of the other valuable organizations and events in the coming weeks.

The Aspen Buddy Program matches volunteer adult mentors to children of all ages in Aspen. These children are referred to the Program by a variety of agencies in the valley who have targeted them as at-risk. The adult mentor endeavors to support the child one-on-one in many aspects of life.

Golfers of all abilities sign up to play with Vince Gill and Amy Grant to support Challenge Aspen in late July. After an evening gala and music, the tournament of random foursomes compete in a friendly golf game with challenges and surprises along the way. It’s an amazing benefit that serves people with physical or cognitive disabilities.

The new Aspen Art Museum grows and changes daily it seems and the gala and celebration of its opening in August will be a bash. “Featuring a celebrated wine tasting and auction, seated dinner for 350 guests, live and silent auctions of major works of contemporary art, and the presentation of the AAM’s Aspen Award…” according to the website

My interest in the Aspen Education Foundation is personal, as it is for many parents of school-aged children in Aspen. AEF fortifies the Aspen School District in multiple ways for every student. Brigid and I support the organization every chance we get, including November’s Flamingo-a-Go-Go. This benefit serves AEF by way of the gala, the silent auction, and sponsorships. Buy tickets and look for us!

The end of December brings the Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club’s Audi Cup to grow the programs offered to Roaring Fork Valley kids. Races on Aspen Mountain plus an Apres-Race Party that has become pretty famous. It’s a fun time and wonderful benefit for a widely used and loved organization.

Last year’s Disco Ball costume party to benefit Theatre Aspen set a new standard for the organization’s annual gala. Dinner, silent auction, dancing, dessert and more raises funds that allow Theatre Aspen to continue bringing great live theatre to us every year.

I hope this snippet of the rich philanthropic life of Aspen is useful to you. Be sure to pick up The Scout Guide Aspen for the short version of this list. I hope to see you in town at one or some of these events!
